Geologic history The Maynardville Narrows, near the village of Maynardville in Haywood County, Tennessee, is a section of the base of the Cataloochee Formation, a unit of Ordovician rocks in the Appalachian Basin of the southeastern United States. It is known to have been formed during the late Ordovician period, near the end of the Paleozoic era. Sporophyll formation The Maynardville Narrows is an extensive stratigraphic section of psilophyllite rocks in the Outokumpu Group of rocks, occurring in the Maynardville Narrows in southwestern North Carolina and southeastern Tennessee. It is exposed in large areas at the Maynardville, Nashville, and Nashville interstates, the Windy Hill site, and the Cumberland Presbyterian church in that area of Tennessee. This region is associated with the Nashville Basin, where the Maynardville Narrows is overlain by the Nashville Formation. Geologic structure The Maynardville Narrows contains structurally dendritic quartz diorite bodies with a scale of 50 to 150 feet (15 to 45 m) in diameter. These structures are formed as a result of faults that occurred along the mid-ocean ridge axis in the Carboniferous and Permian periods. The site was selected by the Windy Hill group of scientists, as a location in which to investigate psilophyllite formation. The rocks in the Maynardville Narrows are considered to be typical for the formation of psilophyllite, a dacite-type rock, in which psilophyllite is present in the dacite as a secondary phase, resulting in the more typical dacitic rock. On the southern edge of the Maynardville Narrows, in the Cataloochee Formation, are layers of fine-grained white quartz diorite, similar to the southeastern-most diorite in the area. These layers appear to be physically distinct from the dioritic rocks that formed in the Maynardville Narrows.
